MTHL Carbon Reduction Policy - 21/08/2026
MTHL Fleet Services
Policy Structure (Detailed)
1. Purpose & Scope
• Reduce greenhouse gas emissions across workshop operations (CO₂e).
• Cover all activities: diagnostics, repair, parts handling, waste disposal, logistics, and supply chain engagement.
• Apply to all staff, contractors, and suppliers.
2. Carbon Measurement Framework
• Use GHG Protocol for organisational emissions and ISO 14067 for product-level carbon footprints.
• Adopt the ARIES standard for repair-level carbon reporting (Scope 1–3).
• Annual carbon inventory covering:
o Scope 1: fuel use, workshop heating, company vehicles.
o Scope 2: electricity for lighting, lifts, compressors, spray booths.
o Scope 3: parts supply chain, waste disposal, courier services, customer vehicle movements.
3. Carbon Reduction Hierarchy
Based on PAS 2080:2023 carbon management principles:
1. Eliminate – avoid unnecessary processes (e.g., reduce idling, optimise job flow).
2. Reduce – improve efficiency (LED lighting, insulation, efficient compressors).
3. Substitute – switch to low carbon alternatives (renewable electricity, water based paints).
4. Compensate – only use offsetting for residual emissions.
4. Operational Reduction Measures
Energy & Equipment
• Use LED lighting and motion sensors, when motion sensors are not
• Switch to renewable electricity tariffs.
• Implement smart metering for real-time monitoring.
Waste & Materials
• Adopt circular economy practices: repair, remanufacture, recycle components.
• Segregate waste streams: metals, plastics, solvents, tyres.
• Use water-based paints and low-VOC materials.
Logistics & Transport
• Reduce customer vehicle movement through digital diagnostics.
• Transition workshop vans to EVs where feasible.
• Optimise parts delivery routes.
Supplier Engagement
• Require suppliers to provide carbon data (aligned with ISO 14067 templates). Supplier completion rates improve significantly with standardised templates.
• Prioritise suppliers with ARIES or PAS 2060/2080-aligned sustainability credentials.
5. Governance & Responsibilities
• Appoint a Carbon Lead responsible for data collection, reporting, and training.
• Provide annual carbon awareness training for technicians and managers. (PAS 2080 emphasises leadership and training as core components.)
6. Targets
• Set annual reduction targets (e.g., 10–15% reduction in Scope 2 emissions through energy efficiency).
• Establish long-term net-zero pathway aligned with UK transport sector guidance.
7. Monitoring & Reporting
• Quarterly monitoring of energy use, waste volumes, and supplier emissions.
• Annual carbon report following ARIES verification requirements.
• Use digital dashboards to track hotspots and progress.
8. Continuous Improvement
• Conduct annual carbon hotspot analysis (required under PAS 2080).
• Review new technologies: heat recovery systems, battery repair processes, EV diagnostics.
• Benchmark performance against industry peers.

Vehicle Workshop Carbon Reduction Policy Objective: Reduce CO₂e emissions across all workshop operations using ARIES, PAS 2080, ISO 14067, and GHG Protocol frameworks. Commitments:
• Measure Scope 1–3 emissions annually.
• Reduce energy consumption through efficient equipment and renewable electricity.
• Minimise waste via repair-first, remanufacture, and recycling practices.
• Engage suppliers to provide carbon data and prioritise low-carbon options.
• Train staff annually on carbon reduction practices.
• Set annual reduction targets and publish progress reports. Review: Policy updated every 12 months.
Carbon Reduction Plan – Vehicle Workshop
1. Purpose
This Carbon Reduction Plan sets out how the workshop will measure, manage, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions across all operations. The aim is to achieve year on year reductions in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, support UK net zero goals, and improve operational efficiency.
2. Organisational Boundaries
The plan covers:
• Workshop operations (sales, diagnostics, repairs, servicing, MOT)
• Parts storage and handling
• Waste management
• Company vehicles and transport
• Supplier and customer interactions
• All staff, contractors, and on site partners
3. Emissions Baseline
The workshop will establish a baseline using the GHG Protocol:
Scope 1 (Direct Emissions)
• Heating
• Fuel used in company vehicles
• On site combustion (compressors, heaters)
Scope 2 (Purchased Energy)
• Electricity for lighting, lifts, compressors, chargers
Scope 3 (Indirect Emissions)
• Parts supply chain
• Waste disposal (tyres, oils, solvents, metals)
• Courier deliveries
• Staff commuting
• Customer vehicle movements
• Paints, chemicals, consumables
Baseline year: 2025/2026
4. Carbon Reduction Objectives
Short Term (1–2 years)
• Reduce electricity consumption by 10–15%
• Transition 50% of workshop vans to EVs
• Reduce gas usage by 10%
• Increase recycling rates to 85%+
• Work towards 50% of suppliers provide carbon data
Medium Term (3–5 years)
• Reduce Scope 2 emissions by 40% through efficiency
• Introduce low carbon parts and remanufactured components as standard*
Long Term (Net Zero Pathway)
• Achieve net zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040 (where possible*)
• Reduce Scope 3 emissions through supplier engagement and circular economy practices
5. Reduction Measures
5.1 Energy Efficiency
• Install LED lighting throughout the workshop.
• Fit motion sensors in low use areas.
• Maintain compressors and lifts to reduce energy waste.
• Introduce smart meters for real time monitoring.
5.2 Renewable Energy
• Switch to a 100% renewable electricity tariff.
• Explore rooftop solar feasibility (annual review).
5.3 Waste Reduction & Circular Economy
• Prioritise repair over replace where safe and compliant.
• Use remanufactured parts when approved by OEMs.
• Segregate waste streams: metals, plastics, tyres, oils, solvents.
• Partner with certified recycling companies.
5.4 Transport & Logistics
• Reduce unnecessary customer vehicle movement using digital diagnostics.
• Optimise parts delivery routes.
• Transition fleet vehicles to electric vans where practical.
• Encourage staff car sharing and cycling.
5.5 Procurement & Supply Chain
• Require suppliers to provide carbon footprint data (ISO 14067 format).
• Prioritise suppliers aligned with PAS 2060/2080 sustainability standards.
• Reduce packaging waste by choosing bulk orders and reusable containers.
5.6 Staff Training & Engagement
